POINTS RACE #14: MOSIER 100, DIATTE 96; 'SHEPHERD'S PLAID' FOR SOME

Points Race #14 was almost painful to watch and I wonder if any new fans were gained from the fair audience. The dry slick and dusty track resulted in an A Main with 10 cautions, consuming over 39 minutes (longer than last two races combined). Although expected to go 25 laps, it was flagged at 20. Of the 21 car lineup, only 10 finished on the lead lap; five completed less than 10 laps. Ryan Diatte started on the pole and led until lap 17 when he was overtaken by Dave Mosier who started 4th. Mosier went on to take his third win of the season; Diatte finished 2nd. Martin Whittingham started 8th, was among the top 5 from lap 12, took 3rd on lap 15 and finished 3rd. Danny Zuger came from 20th to 4th. Mark Chaves started 9th, went to the rear after a lap 7 spin, came back for 5th place but was DQd (failed to go to tech). Punky Pires, currently ranked 5th and going strong, started 12th and was up to 3rd by lap 14 but got banged around, lost momentum and had to settle for 6th (credited with 5th because of the DQ). John Phillips, returning to action after a nasty crash earlier in the season, had his best yet A Main finish - 7th - and he was exhausted from the effort; looked a bit like Charles Bronson after one of his famous fights.

This night, there was a birthday celebration for Troy Diatte (Saturday) and Ryan Diatte (Friday). Thanks to the many members and friends who signed the birthday card - in the spirit of good fellowship and club camaraderie. The Diatte family brought a delicious birthday cake and homemade cupcakes to share; and, they even had milk! I tried to import something fun from the Fair but totally failed. Snuffy's clowns and belly dancers were out of the question but I thought I had arranged (with Fair Director, Entertainment Director, Race Director and Track Promoter) to, at least, have the mariachi band come to the grandstand and play Happy Birthday. The time for their appearance came and went - they stiffed us. Thanks a lot, Mariachi de California. Grosero! Next time, we invite a country western band. Rick-it saved the day by having people in the grandstand sing Happy Birthday to Ryan during post-race interviews.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ROBERT MESLOH AND TYLER SCHMIDT (HEAT WINNERS), RYAN AMELN (DASH WINNER) AND DAVE MOSIER (HEAT AND FEATURE WINNER). THANKS TO ALL DRIVERS WHO SUPPORTED BAD IN THE COUNTY FAIR RACE.

WEAR AND MESLOH DO WELL AT RENO-FERNLEY

On September 8, the Mesloh team traveled to Reno-Fernley Raceway to compete with the 'F' cars on the fast 3/8 mile, high banked clay oval. In the same heat, John Wear and Robert Mesloh finished first and second. In the 23-car feature won by Reece Wilson, John finished second and Robert finished third. CONGRATULATIONS TO JOHN AND ROBERT. These two quiet young men are gaining experience and making impressions; carrying their success in motorcycle racing over to dwarf car racing. Watch out!

CONGRATULATIONS TO SPANKY GRENERT ON WINNING THE 2007 NORCAL CHAMPIONSHIP!

The 2007 NorCal championship was decided in the last points race of their season - just as the BAD championship was decided in 2006. CONGRATULATIONS TO SPANKY GRENERT! I have read that contender, Kevin Bender, was taken out by a 'bad' driver. Last year, points leader Mark Chaves, was victim of a crash which killed his chance for a second championship.

IMPORTANT UPDATE ON BAD REGIONAL

PLANNING MEETING
It's only seven weeks until the BAD Regional and Joe would like to have a planning meeting next week. As soon as we hear from members who have already volunteered, we'll post the date and time for the meeting. Anyone willing to help make this a successful and memorable Regional is welcome to attend. The meeting will be held at the Red Roof Inn in Watsonville just off Highway 1 (see brochure below).

EVENT LODGING
There are many hotels in Santa Cruz and Monterey; few in between. Watsonville has Comfort Inn (831/728-2300), Best Western (831/724-3367), Holiday Inn Express (831/728-3600) and Red Roof Inn (see below). Only Red Roof Inn has offered a special rate for our dates in October - $59.49 + tax; includes continental breakfast. Rates quoted for the other hotels range from $84.99 to $179.99 so, if you need lodging, make your reservation ASAP. Keep in mind that, IMCA Nationals will be on the same dates and traveling teams will also be looking for lodging. The hotel owner (Ramona Allen) is reserving a block of rooms for us at the special rate; cutoff date is September 30. If you call, refer to Bay Area Dwarfs. The hotel is convenient to the track; has ample parking for haulers and 24 hour security

BAD PLATOON VISITS PETALUMA SPEEDWAY; JOHN WEAR SCORES HAT TRICK

Last Saturday, a small group of BAD members traveled to Petaluma Speedway - the Mesloh gang, the Diatte family, the Whittinghams, Joe, Chewy and myself. Dwarf cars were on the program with 'Run what you brung' 360 sprint cars. Four B cars, #13B of Robert Mesloh, #14B of John Wear, #56B of Martin Whittingham and #57B of Ryan Diatte, joined a field of dwarf cars totaling 16. Promoter, Jimmy Soares, had prepared the 3/8 mile black adobe track to perfection and kept it groomed throughout the night; it was smooth, tacky and 'hooked up'. In qualifying, fast time for dwarf cars was 17.195 sec; at 17.21_, John Wear was damned close! Ryan and Robert started 3rd and 4th in the first heat; Ryan won and Robert finished 2nd. Martin and John started 4th and 5th in another heat; John won by about 15 car lengths and Martin finished 4th. Based on qualifying times, Martin and John were in the dash and they put on a great race at the front. Martin led with John pressuring until they exited turn 4 on the last lap; Martin went a bit high and John made the pass for the win as the flag dropped. The 25 lap feature had no cautions and went flag-to-flag. John started on the pole and led the entire race; lapping cars by lap 21and winning by a straightaway - awesome! Ryan started inside row 4 but gremlins were on board and the 57B made no progress, lost ground, was lapped and finished 12th - bizarre. This was an unfamiliar track for the Diattes and they seriously misjudged the setup. Martin started outside row 1 and, although his gear choice was not optimal, he ran strong for a 3rd place finish. Robert had a much improved car this night but was more polite than daring with his new power and settled for a 9th place finish.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL BAD DRIVERS ON THE GREAT EFFORT, TO RYAN DIATTE ON HIS HEAT WIN, TO MARTIN WHITTINGHAM FOR WINNING 99.7% OF THE DASH AND TO JOHN WEAR ON THE HAT TRICK (HEAT, DASH AND FEATURE WINS)*.

*Actually, John had a hat trick by two definitions, He won three races in the same event and he won the feature (1) from the pole (2) certainly with the fastest lap (3).

THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR THE GOOD TIME BEFORE, BETWEEN AND AFTER THE RACES AND THANKS TO THE MESLOHS FOR THEIR HOSPITALITY (FOOD).

THANKS TO JIMMY SOARES FOR THE EXCELLENT RACING SURFACE AND THE FREE BEER AND PIZZA AFTER THE RACES.

URGENT: DORTO WANTS YOUR CHERRY OVER THIS WEEKEND

Chris Dorto is asking drivers to bring their dwarf cars for show at a charity event this weekend at Laguna Seca Raceway, the 15th annual 'Cherry's Jubilee'. This year, proceeds will benefit the neonatal intensive care unit at the Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital. Normally, the display is limited to 'cherry' cars, 1973 and earlier. Since Chris has made some contacts, it seems that our scale vintage replica cars will qualify for one of the display categories. Chris is coordinating the dwarf car entry so, please contact him for complete details as soon as possible.

This is another opportunity for our club to help with a great cause on a race- idle weekend; at the same time, have some fun and get some exposure. Our members have always been very generous in charity events - the thing that got me involved with BAD in 2004.

According to information I have, the display will be in the Laguna Seca paddock area; on Saturday, September 8th from 8 AM to 5 PM and on Sunday from 8 to 3. Some cars will be allowed to 'hot lap' but not likely dwarf cars.

For general information, go to the Cherry's Jubilee website at www.cherrysjubilee.org/information.html. To CONTACT CHRIS, call 831/261-1761 AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

If we can get some cars in the display, Joe and I will see you ALL there. THANKS for your continued support.

**for races completed, omitting non-typical races (1 for Mosier, 2 for Diatte, 4 for Ameln)

These three drivers are ideal competitors - enormous natural talent and excellent sportsmanship. In my opinion, their success comes from somewhat different driving styles. Ameln is aggressive/impulsive, Diatte is aggressive/methodical and, Mosier, in the zen of sports, is just plain 'in the zone'. Dave has been amazingly consistent this season. Consistency is shown by the narrow spread of his scores; mean of 95.8 with standard deviation of only 2.7. Consistency is also shown by his close lap times; chart below is from Race #10 (mylaps.com).

Over the last 8 races, Mosier and Diatte have run close in points; 742 for Mosier, 748 for Diatte. The remarkable rookie has an unlikely mathematical chance of leading in the final points tally but, even if he has perfect scores in the last 3 races, Mosier has a firm grip on the lead and can clinch the championship with just 2 races averaging 90 points.

1-2 FINISH FOR ROOKIES DIATTE AND WEAR IN RACE #13; FOURTH WIN FOR DIATTE!

Points Race #13 was one of the best yet this season. Ryan Diatte won his heat, setting fast lap time for the night (15.919 sec), then scored his fourth feature win as a rookie. John Wear, another up-and-coming rookie who won the feature last week, ran the fastest lap in the feature, led briefly and challenged hard but, with poor track conditions for late race passing, settled for a close 2nd (diff = 0.276 sec). Ryan Ameln and Dave Mosier ran 3rd and 4th most of the race, with Mosier finishing 3rd and Ameln finishing 4th. Punky Pires ran another excellent race, maintaining a furious pace for the 5th place finish and looking like he had had a 'Hot August Night'. The top five cars ran close and hard, sometimes three wide, and were separated by only 1.6 seconds at the finish! WOW. With that kind of Friday night action, I didn't know whether to have a cigarette, roll over and go to sleep or put my clothes on and go home.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ROOKIES, DIATTE AND WEAR, ON THE 1-2 FINISH AND, CONGRATULATIONS TO THE OTHER FRONT RUNNERS! GREAT RACE, GREAT SHOW.

This night, Tyler Schmidt, 2006 BAD Rookie-of-the-Year, did double duty - both sprint car and dwarf car action. In the dwarf car, he won his heat race and first trophy dash. CONGRATULATIONS, TYLER!

BAD REGIONAL

Reminder: the BAD Regional, originally scheduled for Chowchilla Speedway, has been relocated to Ocean Speedway. Please note the dates on your calendar - October 12-13. When the closure of Chowchilla was announced, Joe negotiated with promoters at other tracks; first Kings, then Ocean. Both tracks were offered so Joe asked drivers to vote for their choice. Drivers present at the last race voted unanimously to have the race at Ocean. Only Bill Martinez voted in favor of Kings (because it is close to Tachi). Dave Penny also favored Kings so, who knows, he might be down there on a dark night with the parts trailer.

This will be the first time for a dwarf car Regional at Ocean Speedway. We hope everyone will help to make it special and memorable. Our club probably has the largest roster in WSDCA so dust 'em off and bring 'em out for a full BAD car count.

A successful Regional requires a lot of effort so contact Joe if you would like to help with promotion, hospitality or entertainment. Kate Dorto and Debbie Brechel have already volunteered to do food prep and they need some stuff. Some of us will be looking for raffle prizes and we need your ideas. Chris Dorto is probably organizing some mischief but we will also need a few legal activities (e.g., pumpkin hurling contest; Chewy, we need pumpkins).

To promote the Regional, flyers are being distributed. We want to attract new fans for our sport and we want to attract some sponsors for this event. We already have some pledges of sponsor money. Among the pledges so far is $500 to win. If you would like to help with this, you can print some flyers (on colored paper) from the following file or, give me a call and I will send you a batch.

Thanks, everybody, for your support. BAD RULES!

FEATURE WIN FOR ANOTHER RISING ROOKIE, JOHN WEAR!

John Wear is another impressive 2007 rookie. He ran six of the first 11 points races (alternate driver of the #14B), with five top 10 finishes including a 3rd. In Points Race #12, he started outside row 1 in the feature after winning his heat by a very wide margin. When I spoke with him before the race, I told him he seemed ready for a win. He took an early lead but, when he spun on lap 7 and fell back, his chances for the win seemed unlikely. However, by lap 12, he was back up to 4th and on the move. Over the next few laps, all three top-ranking drivers were out with mechanical problems, leaving John and teammate, Robert Mesloh, at the front. By lap 18, John had taken the lead which he held for the win. This was a damned exciting race. Detailed race data has not yet been posted on mylaps but it should be noted that John had best time in the feature, best time so far this season = 15.908 sec!

CONGRATULATIONS, JOHN!

This was a very good night for the Mesloh team cars. Robert Mesloh, in the #13B, also won his heat; started on the pole in the feature, was leading late in the race and finished 2nd. Saturday was also a very good night for John and Robert, racing at Petaluma Speedway. They each won their heat, John won the dash and, again, they finished 1st (John) and 2nd (Robert) in the feature.

Please find some 'tranks' for me and Jerry.

THIRD FEATURE WIN FOR ROOKIE, RYAN DIATTE!

CONGRATULATIONS, RYAN!

At least in the past two seasons, there have been no feature wins by a rookie. Ryan has three* in 11 races and there are 5 races left on the schedule. As Jack Miller would say, 'WOW! This victory is especially impressive - leading Mosier (current points leader), Chaves (2002 BAD Champion and dominant 2006 driver), Schmidt (2006 Rookie-of-the-Year) and Ameln (3-time 2007 winner) to the checkered flag.

*plus several near wins (by split-seconds)

Ryan - We know your engine is legal but we might be testing you for 'roids' next time we find you in the tech line.

BAD SPONSORS

BAD is a non-profit organization whose operating budget depends partly on sponsor contributions. We all appreciate the continued support of EAGLE MOTORSPORTS, E J PIRES TRUCKING COMPANY, MAXEY WIZARD WORKS and other generous sponsors. Earlier this season, I offered to help Joe find even more sponsors, in an effort to boost funds available for awards, trophies and other club needs. More importantly, this could also provide the means to sweeten purses. I wrote a Sponsor Proposal and have already presented copies to some targeted companies/potential sponsors. The response has been positive but some companies will not be able to make a commitment until next season; others are expected to give some level of support for the remainder of this season; many others are yet to be contacted. One company on my list was Winchester Auto and Mike Weaver was kind enough to make the contact and deliver a proposal. Success!

We welcome WINCHESTER AUTO as a new BAD sponsor.
Please support this business and let the owners know their support is
important and appreciated.
Location: 3545 Soquel Dr, Soquel
Owner: Mark Froling

Perhaps other BAD members would be willing to help find sponsors. Your business connections could provide valuable leads and links to sponsor dollars. If you would like to help, I would be pleased to provide a copy of the Sponsor Proposal with custom cover page. The basic package consists of an introduction and a summary of sponsorship opportunities.

OUR APOLOGY FOR INACTIVE WEBSITE

Maybe it was a good thing that the website has been silent for the past week or so. I got in much less trouble for expressing myself. And, I had time to recover from the train wreck. Of course, 'train wreck' was just a metaphor but, I stood up and got hit hard by something big.

Anyway, the website problem was the result of an internet block in China where my evil son, Chris, controls its day-to-day operation. Many thousands of other websites have been censored. I have no idea what content of our website might be considered 'sensitive' - photo of Dorto?

CONGRATULATIONS TO DAVE MOSIER!

Dave - I'm sorry this comes two and a half weeks after the fact. And, I'm sorry I missed your special night.

Dave has had more than his share of #13s in the pill draw but he has no reason to be superstitious. On Friday 13th last October, he had heat and dash wins and top 4 in the feature. This time (Friday 13th), he got the sweep.

Dave is having an outstanding season - ten races, with two A Main wins, the Race #10 sweep and no score under 90! Dave is not only a superb driver but also an exemplary sport. It's just damn fun to watch him work, especially from the infield or backstretch perch; someday, I'll figure out how to squeeze in there with him during staging (how about this week, Dave?).

Unfortunately, there seem to be no trophy photos for this event. So, I decide to use one of my 'file' photos, dummied up with a nice trophy.

CONGRATULATIONS, DAVE!

MESSAGE FROM CRAIG WARDNER, RE: MOTOR TECH

'The following is a list of cars that were inspected at the Mohave and Victorville Nationals. All of these cars passed the bore & stroke test and were found to have legal throttle bodies and no visible porting. I would personally like to thank all the drivers and crews for their complete cooperation. I must also thank 'Chewy' Castillo, Randy Pooler and Dave Penny for their assistance, without which I would not have been able to test this many cars in the limited amount of time available during race days. Special thanks goes to Joe Brechel of Bay Area Dwarfs for making it possible for me to attend these races and for supplying the necessary tools. Joe has really stepped up and put forth the effort to make motor tech possible at the Western States Nationals. Joe understands the importance of controlling cost and competitive parity to the future of dwarf car racing nationwide. The efforts of Joe, Frank & Janis Munroe and the presidents of WSDCA member clubs should be applauded. I am currently working on guidelines, requirements and procedures that will help bring a more organized and professional operation to WSDCA motor tech. When I am able to get them on paper, they will be forwarded to member clubs for additional input so that we can apply them in a smooth and efficient manner (probably in '08). This has been a very positive experience for me and I have enjoyed meeting you all. I know, by working together, we can be successful in maintaining and improving the sport we all enjoy so much. THANK YOU ALL!'

Ryan Diatte was feature winner at Kings Speedway on Saturday, July 7; leading flag-to-flag with Dave Mosier in hot pursuit. Ryan and Dave crossed the finish line 0.161 seconds apart! Ryan scored his first feature win at Ocean Speedway on June 15. In that race, Ryan and Dave were separated by only 0.033 seconds! So, congratulations Ryan on your second feature win as a 2007 rookie (with seven races left) - certainly impressive and possibly unprecedented among BAD rookies.

TYLER SCHMIDT IN TRANSITION TO SPRINT CARS

Unfortunately, for technical reasons, we missed the target date (Tyler's birthday) for this announcement. Please accept our apologies.

Tyler Schmidt turned 16 on June 28th* - Belated Happy 16th Birthday,
Tyler!!

Tyler has been racing since he was 12 years old. In go karts, he won
39 main events and four season championships. Plans for a move up to
dwarf cars in 2006 were delayed by a minimum age requirement.
However, two days after his 15th birthday, he completed his first
dwarf car main event and his exceptional performance from mid-season
earned him BAD Rookie-of-the-Year honors. He ran 10 of 17 scheduled
events; 9 A Main starts with 4 top 10 finishes. His points average
per race was in the range of averages for the final top 10 BAD
drivers. This season, he divides his time between dwarf car racing
and sprint car racing, preparing for yet another move up.

Tyler has been driving the Schmidt family sprint car** in the Wright
One Construction 360 Sprint Car Series at Ocean Speedway. With some
coaching and minimal practice, he appeared in his first sprint car
main event on March 23. As a rookie, in the company of sprint car
veterans like Brent Kaeding and Brad Furr, he has been making great
progress . At the mid-point of the 10 race series, he is ranked 17th
(avg finish = 14.75; 51 points in 4 races); the only other rookie,
Rick Wright Jr, is ranked 14th (avg finish = 20.80; 61 points in 5
races). This Friday (June 29), Tyler will resume his pursuit of
Rookie-of-the Year honors in this series. His eventual goal is to
advance to USAC, the premier series for non-winged sprint cars.
Meanwhile, he plans to compete in a limited number of races with the
California Sprint Car Civil War Series and possibly some non-winged
sprint car events.

Come to Ocean on Friday and join the BAD members and good friends who
already support and encourage Tyler. There will be fireworks to help
celebrate his birthday (and Independence Day).

* Factoid: This date (6/28) is the only date each year where both month and day are different perfect numbers. Perfect numbers have fascinated astrologers and mathematicians for several thousand years. They are rare. Until recently, only four were known; now there are 39. The last one discovered has over 4 million digits! Maybe the special numbers will bring Tyler luck in his future racing career.

GREAT RACE #8
CONGRATULATIONS TO TOP FINISHERS

Points Race #8 was great but had a sweet and sour finish. In his eagerness for a win (after two consecutive 2nd place finishes), Ryan D* broke the nose-to-tail alignment on a late race single-file restart; took the pace on the inside as the flag dropped and pulled ahead of Dave who was unable to regain the lead in the remaining laps and had to settle for 2nd place. Dave** was awesome in this race; leading from lap 6 until the lap 15 caution/restart and headed for a possible sweep (after winning heat and dash). He had best times in hot laps, his heat (in fact, all heats), the dash and the feature. One has to wonder about the outcome if the intent of the single-file restart rule had been applied by the flagger - not to steal the joy from the remarkable rookie or fan the flames for the champ frontrunner.

*ranked 2nd in series points, mid-season; avg finish (excl Chowchilla DNF) = 3.29!
**current series points leader, mid-season; avg score = 95.25 (none less than 90)!

The single-file restart rule needs immediate attention. It has no real definition in WSDCA Rules and is not even stated in Ocean Speedway General Rules. A detailed rule will be written prior to the next scheduled race; BAD members and track officials will be thoroughly briefed to avoid future problems. Thanks everyone for your consideration.

RACES ARE ON AT KINGS

Recently, there was a question about our July 7 race at Kings Speedway. Today, Doug Lockwood, Chief Steward, called to explain that the promoter did some re-scheduling and mistakenly left out dwarf cars. The schedule has been corrected - dwarf cars at Kings on July 7. Doug said the temperature there has been over 100 deg F so, bring coolers, pop-ups, dry fiber shirts and your thong panties. There will be fireworks that night.

Thanks to Ryan Diatte for also posting this info on our Discussion Board today.

unfortunate mishap in his heat (started pole) but looked great in his
first sprint car feature (scored 11th). Congratulations, Ryan! Hope

CONGRATULATIONS TO RYAN AMELN!

Four trophies in two weeks; two Trophy Dashes and two A Mains - WOW!
Ryan A has a rodeo style of driving - determined and fearless - so I'm giving him a nickname = Rodeo Ryan. When his steel gray horse is healthy, he puts spurs to the throaty #4, goes to the front of the herd and, unlike a good cowboy, does not look back. He is hard to catch and hard to pass. With 3 main event wins so far, he is a very strong contender for the 2007 BAD Championship.

CONGRATULATIONS TO RYAN DIATTE!

Back-to-back near wins against Rodeo Ryan - IMPRESSIVE!
Ryan D, rookie standout, came to BAD with a nickname = Flyin' Ryan. In Race #6, he pressured and challenged Ryan A; ran side-by-side and led briefly but, at the end of the race, found no traction on the outside of slick track and settled for second. In Race #7, he was at the front again with Ryan A; led 12 laps but, near the end of last lap, got caught up in heavy traffic, lost the lead and settled for second by difference of only 0.104 sec.

Ryan Ameln with two trophies (May 25 dash and feature) to add to his collection.

Ryan Diatte with his proud family; from right to left, Dad (Troy), Bro (Camron), Mom (DeeDee), Grandma (Sandi Watts) and Grandma's traveling companion from Bakersfield.

At the end of the 2006 season, Mark Chaves and Matt Sargent decided to move on to other forms of racing: But, they both returned for BAD Points Race #4 at Ocean Speedway on April 27. It was Sargent (1) - Chaves (2) in Heat 1 and Chaves (1) - Sargent (2) in the Dash. Chaves won the A Main and Sargent took second place. Mark was driving a borrowed car, the #75B owned by Mark Tillinger. Matt was driving his own #7B, just repaired after a crash at the end of last season.

No, not the old NORCAL Spanky. This is the new BAD Spanky! - a companion for Dave in the Eagle Motorsports trailer.
When I first heard about the parts trailer, I suggested something to attract customers; a monkey or belly dancer. I've had no luck with belly dancers (ever) but just had a monkey shipped from New Jersey. Be sure to check out Spanky when you come to Dave's trailer at Chowchilla.
Dave served complimentary coffee at his trailer in Watsonville and promises to do the same at Chowchilla - another reason to visit the trailer. Oh, and Dave has a complete stock of parts for sale.

The last BAD race (#3) was almost a month ago. A few drivers went to Mohave last week but, as far as I know, most have been idle - way too long. I hope everybody is ready for some racing and will fill the pits at Ocean on Friday. My last blood test showed very low levels of dirt and I look forward to a good dose of that racing pollutant.

I hope you all race hard, close and fair and I wish you all could be winners. For the driver scored last in the A Main, I will leave a six pack of attitude adjuster for you at Dave's trailer.

FAST TIMES AT OCEAN SPEEDWAY ON MARCH 30

This info (best times) is from Samantha Harper, Ocean scorer (TX system). I calculated speeds for those fast laps and added that data to the table.

PLEASE NOTE: The speeds shown in the table for Kings Speedway (posted yesterday) were supplied by track staff and are incorrect. For example, the average speed shown for the fastest time was 84.4 mph. If the fastest time was 19.183 seconds and the track is 3/8 mile, the speed would be 70.37 mph (not 84.4 mph). For the speeds shown, the track would have to be 0.45 mile (9/20) - not so. I calculated speeds for the whole table but will just leave the data as it was given to me. Anyone dying to have all the correct speeds can calculate them using the simple equation, s = d/t..

SCORING PARADOX - WIN/NO WIN SITUATION

Sometimes, Joe just doesn't give me enough to think about.

Historically, auto races have ended with the drop of a checkered flag - when the leading edge of the leading car car crosses the start/finish line. Automatic timing systems (transponders) offer great improvement in the scoring of races but I think there is one slight complication that should be considered. The detection loop at most tracks has been installed at the start/finish line. Ideally, then, a transponder should be at the leading edge of a race car so that its signal is simultaneous with the drop of the checkered flag. However, it is not practical to install a transponder near the front of most race cars and WSDCA has decided that they should be installed behind the rear firewall of dwarf cars. Therefore, a race is not over when the flag drops but an instant later when the transponder passes over the detection loop. This is not NASCAR or INDYCAR with photo finishes but there will be some close dwarf car races. It is theoretically possible that the car taking the flag first will not be recorded as the winning car.

To illustrate, I did a few quick calculations for one possible scenario:
Let's say two dwarf cars are coming to the line; one right at the line (#1) and one 6 inches off the line (#2). By the flag only, car #1 would win the race.

Now, say both cars have transponders located 6 feet from the front bumper and the detection loop is at the finish line. If car #1 is going 75 mph and if car #2 is going 82 mph, the transponder signal for car #2 will be ahead by 0.0005 sec - a difference within the resolution of the AMB system.

I discussed this briefly with AMB rep, Balton Aulls, and he agreed with my logic. BUT, such a scenario would be an extreeeeeemly rare occurrence. If it did occur, there would probably be visual verification of the finish by a track official. At Indy, there's a camera that takes a frame every 1/10,000th of a second focused on the start/finish line.

Now, Joe, give me something useful to think about.

GUIDELINE FOR INSTALLATION OF TRANSPONDERS

Obviously, for fairness in scoring, transponders must be uniformly located on any class of race cars using them and competing together. A decision was made that members of all clubs sanctioned by WSDCA must have transponders installed on the rear firewall of their dwarf cars. The photo shows the location on Kevin Bender's car. In this case, a flat bar was welded across the tube frame for attachment of the transponder bracket; there are other methods (bar is optional). This point is the same on all cars with Hot Rod and M&M chassis - 6 feet, 9 inches from the front bumper. Anything in that plane is acceptable. However, cars have different 'packaging' of components in that area so the exact location of transponders (in that plane) will vary.

It is important that the transponder...
1) be mounted vertically
2) be no more that 2 feet from the ground (track surface)
3) have no downward obstruction (metal)
4) have easy access (maintenance and inspection)
Your AMB transponder comes with instructions in five different languages, probably one used by all BAD drivers. I hope you get lucky and score often.

Transponders are required for the first time at Kings Speedway; then for the first race at Ocean Speedway.

UPDATE ON BILL MARTINEZ

Great news! Bill was released from the hospital Sunday morning and is home for some good old-fashioned bone mending. I had three fractured ribs about six months ago and know how damned uncomfortable he'll be in the coming weeks. Thanks to everyone who checked on Bill Saturday night and helped to load his twisted car. Special thanks to the Dortos who took Bill to the hospital and to Gilbert Toste who went back to Chowchilla with a lowboy to pick up his truck. We'll stay in touch with him and hope to see him soon.

Correction: In the first report on Bill's crash, I said he was taken to Merced Hospital; should have said Madera Hospital.

Latest news: Bill is out driving his truck again! Anybody surprised?

REPORT ON BILL MARTINEZ

Bill Martinez was in a frightening crash Saturday night at Chowchilla Speedway. On an early restart of the A Main, as cars were accelerating into turn 3, yellow/red was displayed for no apparent reason. Cars checked up suddenly and the #22B, running inside row 3, caught a wheel and was launched into the K wall. The car suffered major damage in a series of hard end-over-end flips. Bill was examined by EMTs but not immediately taken to the hospital. He returned to his trailer but obviously had injuries which needed medical attention. Kate Dorto took him to Merced Hospital where he was thoroughly examined. X-rays indicated several fractured ribs, a fractured forearm, and some internal bleeding. He will be held for observation overnight at the hospital and, if necessary, will be air-lifted to another facility for further treatment. Chris Dorto stayed with him at the hospital and will be updating us on his condition. Bill is one tough guy but please send him your most positive thoughts.

BRIEF SUMMARY OF BAD DRIVERS' MEETING, 15 FEBRUARY

This meeting was attended by about 40 members and associates. Joe called the meeting to order and asked for a round of introductions. Twenty six drivers signed up for 2007 BAD membership, including seven rookies. A number of others are expected to renew membership at a later date; some were absent this night.

Items discussed:

1) Financial report. Except for a few uncashed payout checks, the club bank account is balanced; less than $100 spent for stationery and postage; the rest returned to the club as purses, awards, trophies and T-shirts.

2) Hoosier tire deal. WSDCA club reps had lengthy discussions with Hoosier factory reps about reducing the cost of tires. A proposal was promised but not delivered. However, the company has agreed not to increase prices this year. The price for all WSDCA clubs will be $118; $5 per tire goes to club, $2 per tire goes to WSDCA.

3) Transponders. xxx

4) Insurance. Joe has been trying to arrange for an affordable group insurance policy to supplement that provided by host speedways. He expects to have a quote sometime next week. Coverage would include ambulance, medivac and dismemberment; up to $50,000.

Drivers indicated they would be willing to pay up to $100 for the additional coverage. Coverage would stay with the club and be in effect wherever the club has scheduled races.

5) Throwaway races. Drivers voted to continue with two throwaways this season.

6) Hard charger points. In recent seasons, hard charger points have been awarded for fast dashes, as an incentive for drivers to participate. That created a bias toward top 10 drivers.

Drivers voted to return to the former system for awarding hard charger points - only for A mains. Drivers refusing to race in a dash will be lined up at the rear of the main event and will not be eligible for passing points.

7) Points with visitors. Drivers voted to award race points according to position even when visitors (non-members) are among the finishers (i.e., no moving up).

8) Tech inspection. WSDCA has hired a tech inspector (Craig Wardner) to check motors on a random basis at Nationals and Regionals. This year, only throttle bodies and bore&stroke will be checked. Joe warned that unannounced motor inspections will also be done at the club level a few times each season.

Questions...

Meaning of 'random'?- Joe said guys running at the front will be checked; few names drawn from a hat.

Carbs on injected motor?... Joe said motors have to stay OEM; fuel injected-motors stay fuel-injected, no carbs.

9) New business.

Location of transponders? Joe said he would coordinate with other clubs and announce guidelines soon.

More laps? Joe said that would be difficult, with curfews and so many classes running; that additional laps would also depend on fewer yellows.

Rookie-of-the Year eligibility? Joe said a little structure is needed and gave three criteria: 1) driver has never run 3 races in one season, 2) driver appears once at every track on the schedule, and 3) driver runs major portion of the season. Providing those criteria are met, R-o-Y will be awarded based on total points. The award would, then, recognize commitment as well as performance.

Joe adjourned the meeting, wishing everyone a 'great racing year'.
